Long time ago I came across this page http://tobe.nimio.info/project/moodlamp, where Toon Beerten created a Moodlamp using a PIC16F628 µC. I remember that back then I didn’t have much knowledge on µC’s programming, so the first thing I did was to buy a Arduino board, and since that time I have been learning a lot and making many different projects with it…

Time has passed, I’ve built the breadboard prototype, then the first version, using only one layer (which is a good version if you want to etch your own PCB). Always wanted to make the project public as an Open Hardware, but due my lack of time, I never did, until I arrive in Genova. I then decided to make a second version of the board, two layers, the ability to program the µC without removing it from the socket (for programing you will need an Arduino, FTDI or USB-to-serial cable) and some available pins for those who want’s to add more features to the board, like a temperature sensor or another kind of sensor.

Sound Activated Lights

This diy sound activated lights circuit turns a lamp ON for a short duration when the dog barks (or a relatively strong sound) giving an impression that the occupants have been alerted. The condenser microphone fitted in a place to monitor sound and generates AC signals, which pass through DC blocking capacitor C1 to the base of transistor BC549 (T1). Transistor T1 along with transistor T2 amplifies the sound signals and provides current pulses from the collector of T2. When sound is produced in front of the condenser mic, triac1 (BT136) fires, activates lights and the bulb (B1) glows for about two minutes.

Assemble the sound activated lights circuit on a general purpose PCB (circuit board) and enclose in a plastic cabinet. Power to the sound activated switch circuit can be derived from a 12V, 500mA step-down transformer with rectifier and smoothing capacitor. Solder the triac ensuring sufficient spacing between the pins to avoid short circuit. Fix the unit in the dog’s cage or close to the sound monitoring spot, with the lamp inside or outside as desired. Connect the microphone to the sound activated lights circuit using a short length of shielded wire. Enclose the microphone in a tube to increase its sensitivity.

Caution:
 Since the sound activated lights uses 230V AC, many of its points are at AC mains voltage. It could give you lethal shock if you are not careful. So if you don’t know much about working with line voltages, do not attempt to construct this circuit. We will not be responsible for any kind of resulting loss or damage.

Audio Amplifier


This audio amplifier circuit delivers up to 200 W of top-class quality for loudspeaker from 4 to 16 ohm. Operating voltage is between 24 and 36 V, max 5 A. The frequency response is from 20 to 20000 Hz.
Please take special care that the transistors and the IC’s have been fixed firmly and solely one or two separated cooling elements with sufficient dimensions for this purpose (thermal resistance < 1K/W).

Doing so it is necessary to mount the transistors and the IC’s insulated (with mica washes and plastic nipple). Please make sure before first operation that the transistors and the IC’s really do not have any electrical connection towards the cooling plate! Therefore, it is possibile to connect directly at the amplifier tape decks, tuners, etc. In case there are connected signal sources with lower output voltage, it is necessary to pre-connect a preamplifier. Then it will alse be posible to connect microphones, etc.
